Health and Safety policy
St John's Wood Removals Health and Safety Policy
St John's Wood Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. We recognise our responsibilities under applicable health and safety legislation and industry best practice, and we actively promote a positive safety culture across all aspects of our operations.
This Health and Safety Policy sets out our general approach and arrangements for managing health and safety risks in connection with our removal, packing, loading, transport, delivery and storage activities.
Policy Aims and Objectives
Our primary aims are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our work. To achieve this, St John's Wood Removals will:
Identify, assess and control risks associated with removals, handling of goods, vehicle operations and work at customers' premises.
Provide and maintain safe systems of work, safe equipment and suitable protective measures for all staff and contractors.
Ensure that employees receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision to work safely and competently.
Promote a culture in which health and safety responsibilities are understood, accepted and actively followed by everyone.
Regularly review and improve our health and safety performance and arrangements.
Management Responsibilities
The management of St John's Wood Removals accepts overall responsibility for implementing this policy and for ensuring that adequate resources are made available to fulfil our health and safety obligations. Management will:
Lead by example in promoting safe behaviour and adherence to health and safety procedures.
Ensure that risk assessments are carried out, documented where appropriate, and reviewed whenever there are significant changes in work activities or conditions.
Provide suitable equipment, including vehicles, lifting aids and protective gear, and ensure these are well maintained and safe to use.
Investigate all incidents, near misses and health and safety concerns, identifying root causes and taking corrective and preventive action.
Consult with employees on health and safety matters and encourage feedback to support continuous improvement.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee and contractor working on behalf of St John's Wood Removals has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must:
Follow all safety instructions, procedures and training provided by the company.
Use vehicles, tools, lifting equipment, furniture covers and protective devices in a proper and safe manner.
Report hazards, defects, near misses, incidents or concerns to their supervisor as soon as practicable.
Cooperate with management on health and safety matters, including attending training and participating in risk assessments where required.
Refrain from any horseplay, dangerous behaviour or misuse of equipment that could compromise safety.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
St John's Wood Removals conducts risk assessments for key activities such as packing, lifting and carrying items, operating vehicles, using stairs and lifts, and working in confined or challenging spaces. We consider the nature of the items being moved, access routes, environmental conditions and any specific customer requirements.
From these assessments we develop safe systems of work and method statements, which may include the use of additional staff, lifting equipment, specialised packing materials, route planning and, where necessary, temporary traffic or access controls. Staff receive instruction and training in these procedures and are expected to implement them at all times.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a core part of removal work, and poor technique can lead to serious injury. St John's Wood Removals is committed to minimising manual handling risks by:
Assessing loads for weight, shape, fragility and stability before moving them.
Using suitable equipment such as trolleys, dollies, straps, ramps and lifting aids wherever reasonably practicable.
Providing manual handling training that covers safe lifting techniques, team lifts, communication between crew members and recognising personal limits.
Ensuring that heavy, bulky or awkward items are handled by sufficient personnel and with appropriate planning.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are essential to our service, and we take vehicle and road safety seriously. St John's Wood Removals will:
Ensure all commercial vehicles are regularly inspected, serviced and maintained in safe working order.
Require drivers to hold the appropriate licence and to follow road traffic laws and company driving standards at all times.
Provide guidance on safe loading and securing of items to prevent shifting during transit and to avoid overloading.
Encourage journey planning that considers traffic, access restrictions and safe parking, especially in busy residential and commercial areas.
Monitor reported vehicle defects and remove unsafe vehicles from service until repairs are completed.
Customer Premises, Public Safety and Site Conduct
Our teams work in a variety of homes, offices and commercial premises. We take care to protect customers, visitors and the general public by:
Maintaining clear access routes and exits and avoiding obstruction of walkways, corridors and fire exits.
Using protective coverings and handling techniques that prevent damage to property and reduce trip and slip risks.
Setting up safe loading and unloading areas and, where appropriate, using signage, cones or barriers to separate work areas from public spaces.
Being mindful of noise, dust and general conduct when working in shared or sensitive environments.
Welfare, Health Monitoring and Wellbeing
St John's Wood Removals recognises the importance of staff welfare and wellbeing. We will, so far as reasonably practicable:
Provide suitable rest breaks, drinking water and access to welfare facilities during working hours.
Monitor work patterns to reduce the risk of excessive fatigue, particularly for driving and heavy manual work.
Encourage employees to report work-related health concerns early so that appropriate support and adjustments can be considered.
Training, Information and Supervision
Health and safety training is an integral part of our operations. We provide induction training for new staff and ongoing training for existing employees, covering topics such as manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment, personal protective equipment and emergency procedures. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for ensuring that staff understand their instructions and that safe working methods are followed on site.
Emergency Procedures and Incident Reporting
St John's Wood Removals maintains procedures for responding to emergencies such as accidents, fire, spillages or sudden illness during removals work. Employees must familiarise themselves with these procedures and cooperate fully in any emergency. All incidents, injuries and near misses must be reported promptly so they can be recorded, investigated and used to improve our arrangements.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, legislation or industry practice. We remain committed to continual improvement, learning from experience and feedback, and investing in safer equipment, training and processes. By working together, management, staff and contractors can ensure that St John's Wood Removals continues to deliver a professional removals service with health and safety at its core.
